Buffet Fife – Split Institution Serving Traditional Dalmatian Food

Traditional Dalmatian food

Tavern Buffet Fife Split is located in an old neighborhood of Matejuska, not far from the Palace walls. Just walk by the sea, pass Riva (a seaside promenade), and you’ll arrive right at Fife. Located in a small, traditional stone house, with an outdoor terrace, tavern Fife is an institution for people of Split. You immediately notice a laid back attitude and a healthy balance between tourists and locals.

Tavern Fife is actually located in two houses, one across the small street from the other. One of them features a kitchen, a counter with drinks and one corner-sitting for maybe 6 people. That’s all. In front there is a lovely terrace. One part of the terrace is covered and partly closed, while the rest is open summer terrace. This means that even in a winter time you can eat outside.

Tavern Buffet Fife Split offers traditional Dalmatian dishes, cooked old fashion style.

Long regarded as something of a shrine to traditional Dalmatian home cooking, Fife is a perennially popular meeting point for hungry local journalists, writers and actors. Expect big, tasty and inexpensive portions of fish stew, pašticada (beef cooked in a wine stew and served with gnocchi or pasta), tripe, goulash, fried fish and stuffed paprika. Fife’s only drawback is it’s popularity with tourist guide-book writers, who have praised the place so much in recent years that it can be difficult to get a seat (or indeed get served) in high season.

Even locals will suggest this place as the must-visit, prototypical konoba (tavern) to explore laid back culinary culture. It is after all a popular spot for local sailors, hipsters, and philosophers. Chances are you will share a table with other guests and chances are you’ll actually meet some folks here, other than just exchanging the odd chinwag. Fife really has a lively vibe and the grumpy yet loving service gives this place character. Fife offers a daily selection of hearty specialties such as tingul, a chicken tomato pot spiced with cloves, grilled fish with Swiss chard and potatoes, lamb and peas, black cuttlefish risotto, fried sardines, tripe, grilled meats, and much more.
