Croatia Tax & Customs Rules for Travelers
Customs regulations in the Republic of Croatia are largely aligned with EU rules and standards. If you’re entering Croatia from outside the EU, here are the key points you should know:
Personal Goods & Duty‑Free Allowances for Travellers to Croatia (Updated)
When you enter Croatia (and the EU) from a non‑EU country, goods of a non‑commercial nature in your personal luggage can be brought in without paying customs duty, VAT (PDV), or excise duties — as long as the value and quantity limits are respected.
📦 Value Limits for Personal Goods (Non‑Commercial)
These limits apply to items you bring in for personal use (e.g., clothes, toiletries, small electronics):
-
€430 (≈ 3,250 HRK) per person for travellers arriving by air or sea
-
€300 (≈ 2,260 HRK) per person for other types of transport (e.g., by land)
-
€150 (≈ 1,130 HRK) for travellers under 15 years old, regardless of transport mode
These amounts are value limits set by Croatia’s Customs Administration and follow EU harmonised rules. If the total value of the goods you bring in exceeds these thresholds, customs duties and taxes may apply.
🍷 Quantity Limits for Certain Goods
The following excise goods are exempt from customs duties and VAT without counting toward the value limits — provided your amounts do not exceed:
-
800 cigarettes
-
400 cigarillos
-
200 cigars
-
1.0 kg tobacco
-
10 litres of strong spirits
-
20 litres of alcoholic beverages (1.2–22 %)
-
90 litres of wine (max 60 L sparkling)
-
110 litres of beer
If you bring more than these quantities, the excess must be declared and may be confiscated or taxed.
🧳 Personal Luggage Exemptions
“Personal luggage” includes items you reasonably need for your trip (toiletries, clothing, cameras, laptops, portable electronics) as long as:
✔ They are intended for personal use
✔ Their type and quantity indicate they are not for resale
✔ You can prove they were part of your luggage upon entry
💶 Currency Declaration
If you carry €10,000 or more (or equivalent in other currency) when entering or leaving Croatia (EU territory), you must declare it to customs.
