Kastelet – Mestrovic
Kastelet – Mestrovic A former summerhouse of the noble Capogrosso family and constructed in the 16th century, Kastelet-Crikvine is an important part of the heritage of arguably Croatia’s greatest sculptor, Ivan Mestrovic, whose presence can be felt in several locations in Split.
The complex had already enjoyed a colourful life prior to 1939 when Mestrovic was shown the property, with the intention of the artist buying it. From rich noble holiday retreat and possible shelter from the ominous Turks, Kastelet-Crikvine was also a tannery, dyeing workshop and lazaretto for plague victims.
After purchasing it Mestrovic and his architect Harold Bilinic adapted the complex. His influience and legacy is very much in evidence, and it is a fascinating part of a cultural visit to Split.
